The summer meet closed on Monday, September 7. First post that final weekend had already been pulled forward to 1:30, the crowds thinned out through the afternoon, and by Tuesday morning Jimmy Durante Boulevard was moving at the speed it moves the other ten months of the year. If you have lived here any length of time, you know the feeling that follows. The town gets its parking back and loses its calendar at the same moment.

That trade used to be the whole deal. This year it isn't. Between now and the first weekend of November, when the Bing Crosby Season opens the gates again, Del Mar has more programmed days than it has had in any recent fall, and almost none of it is coming from the fairgrounds. The Del Mar Historical Society, the Del Mar Village Association, and the Del Mar Foundation are writing this stretch of the calendar. The track is not involved.

What is actually on the calendar

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's own materials have given two different opening dates for the fall meet, one landing on November 6 and one on a Friday that falls on a Saturday this year. Check the DMTC calendar before you make a plan around opening day. Everything above it is settled.

A surf festival that had to be invented by the people who remember it

The Surf Del Mar Festival runs October 8 through 11, it is free, and it is spread across four venues in the downtown you already walk. The Del Mar Historical Society is presenting it. That organization was started in 1985 by Harold "Swede" Throneson, a Marine Corps veteran, and six other residents, which tells you something about how this event was assembled. Nobody bought the rights to a festival and dropped it on the bluff.

Powerhouse Park carries the concerts and screenings, including Endless Summer, plus a woody wagon parade and display. The park sits directly above the 15th Street break, which hosted a Del Mar Surf Club contest back in 1981. Programming a surf film on the grass above the reef where the club actually competed is the kind of decision that only gets made by people who were there.

The reunion has a different weight this year. Don Hansen, the shaper, died in March at 89, and the festival's Surfers Reunion is built partly as a tribute to him. Jeff Lehmann is moderating a Surfing and Sustainability Climate Symposium across the same four days, with ocean conservation and coastal protection on the agenda. Del Mar Plaza is one of the venues, so the whole thing is walkable from Camino Del Mar without moving your car once.

Two food events, four days apart, aimed at completely different people

This is where the shape of the fall becomes legible.

The Del Mar Wine + Food Festival runs September 30 through October 4. It opens with the Signature San Diego party at Monarch Ocean Pub up at Del Mar Plaza, and then it leaves. The Grand Tasting, the centerpiece, is held October 3 and 4 at Surf Sports Park on Via de la Valle, inland of the freeway. General admission starts around $185 for a single day, with the chef dinners, the Rioja tasting, and the celebrity pickleball tournament all ticketed separately. Satellite dinners run out to Rancho Valencia in Rancho Santa Fe and Estancia in La Jolla. The festival is in its fourth year, was co-founded by Alex Morgan, Drew Brees, Rob Machado, and Troy Johnson, has drawn more than 10,000 people in a single year, and has raised over $100,000 for Feeding San Diego. It is a regional event that borrows the Del Mar name and delivers most of its traffic to Via de la Valle.

Four days later, on October 1, the Del Mar Village Association holds a Gather dinner at Coral Del Mar. One night, one seating, a multi-course family-style menu from Coral's head chef with paired wines and cocktails, seats deliberately capped, proceeds going back into DMVA programming. Coral is locally owned and sits in olde Del Mar. You can walk there.

Same week, same category, opposite logic. One event sells a regional ticket and stages the main act inland. The other fills one room in the village and puts the money back into the village.

Neither is better. But if you have been treating the Wine + Food Festival as "Del Mar's fall food event" and wondering why it never feels like it belongs to you, the answer is in the addresses.

The Del Mar Foundation fills in around all of it with the standbys: the First Thursdays series, DMF Talks, the children's Halloween event at Del Mar Plaza, and the Halloween Dog Parade at Powerhouse Park, where dogs stay leashed because the park is not off-leash and never has been. The Foundation has been at this since 1982, manages more than $13 million in endowment and reserve funds, and granted over $130,000 to local organizations in 2024. Five contemporary sculptures it placed downtown with the City in July 2025 are still up, on a 23-month run.

The two new rooms finished their shakedown while you were avoiding downtown

Here is the part that changes how the fall actually feels, and it is a timing story rather than an arrival story.

The old pattern in this town was that new restaurants opened into the race meet. They debuted into eight weeks of visitor volume, ran short-staffed and overwhelmed, and residents wrote them off until spring. Two significant rooms opened this summer, both landed inside the meet, and both are now past that phase with the town half-empty in front of them.

Honor Bar opened in early August at 1404 Camino Del Mar. It is Hillstone Restaurant Group's first restaurant in San Diego County, arriving nine years after Bully's North closed at the end of 2017 following nearly five decades on that corner. The project cycled through R+D Kitchen and then Gulfstream before landing on Honor Bar. Del Mar approved the current building in 2018 at 4,169 square feet over two levels of parking holding 59 spaces, and city officials at the time called it the first newly constructed commercial building in downtown Del Mar in more than three decades. The menu is short by design: nine sushi preparations running from a $14 spicy carrot and avocado roll to a $22 hiramasa roll, alongside the French dip and Ding's Crispy Chicken Sandwich.

Before you walk over, the house rules are specific and they catch people:

• Walk-in only, though you can call ahead to be added to the wait list, which they recommend for parties of two
• Parties capped at four or fewer
• Cashless payment only
• Parking below the building, entered from the alley off 13th Street
• A posted smart casual dress code that rules out athletic wear, hoodies, and flip-flops
• Open daily, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Up at One Paseo, goop kitchen opened on August 31 at 3725 Paseo Pl, and the detail worth knowing is not the name on the door. It is the brand's nineteenth location and the only one where you can sit down. The other eighteen are pickup and delivery. This is a 92-seat flagship, 42 in the dining room and 44 on the patio, designed by Michael Hsu Office of Architecture with Gwyneth Paltrow, and it functions as a test kitchen for the company. You order at the counter and the food is run to your table. Entrées run $16.95 to $29.95, doors are open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and there are items you cannot get at any other location, including the Field of Greens salad pizza that chef Kim Floresca spent close to a year developing on a double-fermented dough. La Jolla and downtown locations are planned, but for now the only room in the country where this brand seats you is in Del Mar Heights.

Then the horses come back, on a different clock

The Bing Crosby Season is a shorter, tighter meet than summer, and the schedule difference matters more than the length. Racing runs Friday through Sunday, with a Thursday added in the closing week, and first post is 12:30 p.m. rather than the 2 p.m. you spent August planning around. That pulls race traffic onto Via de la Valle and Jimmy Durante in the middle of the day instead of the early afternoon, which changes when a lunch run to the village is a good idea. Thanksgiving Day is earlier still, with an 11 a.m. first post and a one-mile Family Fun Run on the Seaside Oval before it. The Uncorked Wine Festival lands at the track on November 14, and the meet closes out November 29 with the Matriarch.

Between now and then, the town is yours, and for the first time in a while there is a reason to be out in it. The village institutions filled the gap the track left, and they filled it with free days and walkable rooms.
